Dave Black with Stevo Alex and his trophies
My name is Dave Black born 1977 and I live in Sunderland England. I am married to Louise. I have two children Stephen and Alex . My Interests include supporting SUNDERLAND AFC and watching Stevo play footie and of course flying tipplers.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN FLYING TIPPLERS ?
I’ve had tipplers since the age of about 15. Ive made many friends through tipplers from all over the world and ive travelled the globe to meet them, also i have had tippler men come and visit me from all over the world .It was my good mate Gavin Craggs, from Sunderland who started me off with the Plester strain of Tipplers. He was a top flyer around that time i started with tipplers and we have been good friends ever since.
Since then , I have flown in competitions for 15 years or more, taking part in well over 60 competitions also experimenting many times in private flys.
WHICH STRAINS DO YOU KEEP?
I keep two famillies, Jack Bodens and George Pilots which I cross mainly for flying purposes, although I do try flying some Bodens as old birds.
WHY DO YOU KEEP THOSE STRAINS?
They have a proven track record both as youngbirds and oldbirds. When crossing the 2 strains together they normally without fail go to dark. Even in bad weather conditions they are usually there or there abouts on a competition day.
WHAT DO YOU PREFER COCKS, HENS or BOTH?
All of my good times are with hens as young and oldbirds. I have flown some cocks but normally choose hens.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FLYER/FLYERS?
One Pilot /Boden youngbird hen flew in 3 yb national winning kits going to dark each time in horrendous weather. Amazing !!! Also my youngbird kit that did 19 hours in 2012 and the new northeast record kit of 5 hens for the may fly of 20hours31 minutes, in 2013 and 3 of them went 23 hours 45 minutes on the longday ,but disqualified as the referee over slept
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TIPPLER LOFT?
Ian elstobs loft is something else. Its always kept imaculate.
WHAT IS YOUR FLYING POSITION LIKE ?
The present position is not as good as previous locations however it is very nice to watch tipplers throughout the day and proven easy to settle tipplers living by alot of fields and countryside. There isn’t much street lighting but I am never moving house again so I will have to cope. I have experienced not much falcon problems so far, therefore happy days ahead.
WHERE DID YOU AQUIRE THE BIRDS FROM ?
I bought my Bodens from a consistant flyer Verley Mignott who had them from Paul Boden and Jim Mcdonald ,who had them direct from Jack Boden himself. The Pilots I bought in from several Sunderland fanciers which George Pilot sent up back in the eighties.
WHO HAS AQUIRED BIRDS FROM YOURSELF?
Alot of the Sunderland flyers too many to mention. I’ve sent them to Ireland, Wales and the Midlands in the uk. Also birds have went to Bulgaria,Turkey, Canada,Chech Republic, Germany, Kosovo , Serbia, Romania ,and Malta.
WHAT IS THE BEST KIT OF TIPPLERS YOU HAVE WITNESSED?
I witnessed Lee Black drop a kit of 5 hens on 21 hours he was a novice at the time . Mick groodys kit of Oldbird cocks 19hrs 40 and 20 hrs 05 in the same year also my own youngbirds flying 19hours and the 20 hour kits
DESCRIBE YOUR LOFT SET UP
I bought a brand new 32 ft long loft from a racing magazine which since moving house twice in a year I have had to reduce the size which now holds 15 large cages with dowall fronts and solid mesh bottoms with drawers. The rest of the set up is situated in the garage and has 2 big dowalled rooms for cocks and hens and 18 individual kit boxes. The loft also is well alarmed and a constant video camera system
